So you want to know all the things that happened in my kitchen this weekend? I had the cookinest weekend and a fantastic time. Nothing like a rainy Sunday to get carried away!
- I baked kale chips, and OMG I'm gonna do it again
- oven-roasted watermelon radishes and turnips
- peeled, sliced, lemon-juiced and cinnamon-sugared all the apples for pie
- soaked a cupful of dried cranberries in Calvados because I am out of raisins
- drank a shot of Calvados, to, umh, make sure it was good enough for the cranberries. Yeah, that's it. Just takin' one for the team.
- poached eggs for breakfast, using the standard vinegar water in a saucepan method (from Dorie Greenspan's "Around my French Table" cookbook) rather than my fancy poaching pan
- made chicken stock (still making chicken stock, actually. I'll keep it simmering for a few more hours.)
- chopped and steamed two heads of romanesco cauliflower (you know, the fancy fractal kind)
- fried up and ate the breakfast bratwurst links because they needed killing
- deconstructed a pomegranate (here's how to do it without red splatter all over)
- chopped up and sauteed a red bell pepper, leeks, bunching onions, and a zucchini, tossed them into a baking dish with eggs and feta for a frittata. That'll be breakfast for most of the week.
- oh yeah, and of course I turned the apples and cranberries into pie. A big one and a little one.
