Got to see a great show last night: Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Joe Ely and Guy Clark were playing at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City, just like they had done two years ago.
Same guys, same setup - just four chairs, four guys sitting down with their guitars, taking turns singing songs and telling stories. They all played a great mix of songs I was well familiar with, and songs I'd not heard before (John Hiatt played two tunes he just recorded; he said the album would be out in June), they invited a friend on stage to play two songs, and they took requests - Lyle Lovett was in the midst of telling a story and tuning his guitar for his next song when a woman in the audience yelled out "On A Boat!", and he paused and said, "Okay!", retuned and played "If I Had A Boat".
I loved it all (even though Lyle didn't play my favorite, "Simple Song", or John Hiatt "Perfectly Good Guitar"), and I've been listening to John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett all day today.
Hey, you ARE my neighbor! Wow!

No fair - if you say that Joe Ely sang Me and Billy the Kid, I'll ...
And if Guy Clark sang L.A. Freeway, oh it's not fair but at least I know what I will be listening to tonight. The next thing you know, you'll be saying that the ghost of Townes turned up to sing To Live is to Fly

No, no, and no. :-)
But they talked about Townes - Joe Ely told a story of how he picked up this scrawny hitchhiker in Lubbock, Texas, years and years ago. This guy who had a guitar and a bag full of vinyl albums, and who turned out to be Townes van Zandt.
