Had a very successful shoppy day, which is rare for me. I started with breakfast at Esther's German bakery, and then found German müsli and a bread baking mix that I am really looking forward to try out. Post-Esther's I HAD TO go to Dittmer's. Got the obligatory Landjägers, Spekulatius hooray!, Rumkugeln, a couple of bars of Milka chocolate, and Pottasche, Hirschhornsalz and Neunerlei for the baking of Lebkuchen, German gingerbread. Oh yes, and I got some Grafschafter Goldsaft too.
On to Penzey's! I got refills of minced garlic and rosemary, and inquired about lava salt. Which they did not have, but I found it at the next store I went to, Sur La Table, where I went for a candy thermometer, so I can try out this recipe for caramels. The above-mentioned Grafschafter Goldsaft (which is sugar-beet syrup) will be my corn syrup substitute.
Since I was in a shopping mood, I also got a small mixing bowl to match the series I already use, a cast-iron skillet bigger than my little one, and the parchment paper and wax paper I will need for baking and caramel-making.
And then, for good measure, and because my neck has been bothering me so much, I got a scarf at The Gap.
