Right. My year has been just like Elvis said. A few regrets, but nothing I need to dwell on, and there is certainly nothing that I need to forget about the past year. And there are several things I am sure I will remember for a long long time:
Watching my greyhound friend Jake die, seeing his heart race for a few moments after the vet had put the needle in, and then stop.
Participating in NaNoWriMo, writing 50,051 words in 30 days, and getting so much more out of it than just a story.
Finding two new tribes that I feel at home with - the NaNoWriMo crowd, and my local blogger friends, and consorting with them on a regular basis.
Having the most wonderful guy tell me "I would like that very much". I still hear his voice in my mind's ear.
Hanging out of the passenger window of Ken and Enda's van in Rocky Mountain National Park like an overeager puppy, breathing the fresh icy air and feeling deliriously happy.
And last but certainly not least, all the small and not so small ways in which Sean and Holly have shown me kindness and generosity. I honestly, truly don't know where I would be without them.
And several great books and several great movies and a bunch of great songs crossed my path.
Great books include Connie Willis' "Passage", Dennis Lehane's "Mystic River", John Crowley's "The Translator", and Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy.
Great movies included Lost in Translation, Mystic River, The Return of the King, Spellbound, Pirates of the Caribbean, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Finding Nemo, and Donnie Darko. (Yes, I know Donnie Darko is not a 2003 release. But I saw it for the first time this year. And even saw it again at a movie theatre. Certainly that must count for something.)
And my favorite songs of the year include "Ohio" and "Lifelong Fling" from Over The Rhine's "Ohio", "Hey Ya" from OutKast's "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below", "Tourniquet" from Evanescence's "Fallen", and just about every song from Robbie Williams' "Escapology".
And I've stayed in 10 different houses, have driven 12 different cars (owned none), and have watched a total of 9 dogs (Kyrie, Jake, Cloe, Mojo, Molly, Belle, Brutus, Mara, and of course Sydney) and 12 cats (Mork, Simba, Greebo, Sammy, Roshi, Allora, Fievel, Layla, uhhh ... whatshisname ... the black and white one with the stumpy tail, Pele, Greybear, and Cocoa).
A full year, and it kept getting better towards the end. I hope this trend will continue.
Here's to a Happy New Year, everyone.
